Comic Book Case

Action Comics #957 (Pissed and flying)
I never read Action Comics when it was under the New 52 banner, something about how it looked with Superman wearing a t-shirt, brown pants, and a cape. But with the resumed numbering and lower price I decided to give it a read. Clark once content to not be Superman even after the death of this Earth's Superman is now back in the suit after seeing Lex Luthor claiming to be the new Superman. It is a bit fitting to see that it is Luthor who gets him to put the suit back on but it does seem that he is reaching a bit when it comes to Luthor, believing him to be as evil as the Luthor from his own Earth. Luthor seems to not believe that he is Superman because he knows Clark Kent is Superman and this Earth's Clark is dead and he notes that this ones looks older and more confident. While the two of them trade blows, Jimmy Olson finds that the reporter Perry sent is . . . . . Clark Kent! Before anything else can be found out, Superman and Luthor find themselves face to face with DOOMSDAY!

This issue felt like a direct continuations of Superman Rebirth but capable of standing on it's own. I'm interested in finding out how Clark Kent can be here, especially when I was hoping that DC would stick to it's guns and keep this stories Superman dead and by default that Clark Kent. Whether or not Luthor can be trusted remains to be seen and I think this should have happened AFTER Justice League cleared Luthor arriving on Earth though issue #50 showed us where he go the suit. Is it worth the read? Well it feels like it so far and I'm willing to give it another issue.

Aquaman Rebirth #1 (eh)
This one was all right. Arthur is apprehending what is essentially an Atlantean terrorist group but what makes it interesting is the mysterious narration who seems to know a lot about not only Aquaman but Atlantis and Spindrift Station. It sounds a bit like a reporter who may be Aquaman's biggest fan. The book feels like more of a legitimate issue 1 and reminds me of the first issue for New 52. My only issue with this one was that it didn't feel new and like Batman's own Rebirth #1 doesn't leave much of an impact but unlike that #1, this one promised a new story with Black Manta back. I'm probably not going to get this one twice a month and just once a month.

Detective Comics #934 (wow)
This book is awesome (so far)! Someone is going after the vigilantes of Gotham City and Batman needs help so he enlists the help of Batwoman to train Spoiler, Robin (Tim Drake), and Cassandra Cain along with CLAYFACE to help combat it. But Batwoman while agreeing to help mentions that Batman is keeping a secret from her, could it be the fact that when Batman asked Azrael who attacked him, Azrael said it was Batman?

I actually read the New 52's Detective Comics and it was a bit shaky in the beginning but it found it's niche quick with me dropping it due to budget. This story is awesome from beginning to end. We barely saw Bruce and Spoiler interact let alone Bruce and Batwoman who not only knew he was Batman but also reveals that they knew they were related through Bruce's mother. The book feels like something out of pre-52 and it just looks awesome. What really took me by surprise was Clayface who misses the man he used to be and Batman offering him a chance to at least be that man again on the inside. This new enemy hasn't actually revealed himself but if what Azrael said was true then they are using the image of Batman as a cover and they do seem to have the numbers as the page ends with a mysterious figure looking over what looks like robots or maybe even just soldiers. This book was described as Gotham City Boot Camp and I am fully enlisted.

Earth 2 Society #13 (Damn it Khalid)
Fury has arrived before the Justice Society and has made her case: offering Amazonian and Atlantis science and technology in exchange for leadership. It isn't exactly well received and met more with honest and justifiable suspicion from everyone but Fury continues to make her case saying that Amazonia has more experience being a nation as well as Atlantis and even mentions the Pandora Vessel. When Kara and Helena talk about it, Khalid mentions that he's been having premonitions from the Fate Helmet shards that show that the Pandora Vessel can be used to bring back their old Earth and presumably the people that were on it. At the same time, the Ultra Humanite has shown us his new army, child soldiers aged physically through gene manipulation and they now serve him. It's a bit like the Shredder and the Foot Soldiers in the 90's film except he found orphans whose parents were lost, one of them being the son of Dick Grayson Batman.

This is a much more straightforward story than the last one, where I couldn't tell where this was going because it had 3 stories that didn't come together, this one has only two with a third one that feels like it ties in better. How Fury will deal with Khalid's idea is promising but I wonder what the risks are and if it is possible to bring the people back to. I'm honestly looking forward to this.

Wonder Woman Rebirth #1 (interesting)
Diana is lost. The story of her origin doesn't actually feel right to her, but does that mean she was made from clay actually? She doesn't know. She contemplates this as she remembers her origins with Ares being either her greatest enemy or her greatest mentor. When placing the lasso on her and asking the question of who and what she is before the lass finally reveals she is many things to many people but she has been deceived. Some part of her life are not true and Diana wants answers so putting on a new costume she heads to Mt. Olympus to find the answers to who she is.

This was . . . . all right but from an idea standpoint it sounds awesome. This feels like it was created to fix changes that were made to her origin that people didn't like or just didn't work out that well. WW has been talked about a lot here and I'm probably one of a few people who still reviewed her book when Finch was writing it. I'm hoping that this clears away some minor inconsistencies but not big ones. I have no problem with her no longer or not actually being the god of war but I'm hoping she will stay the daughter of Zeus. I'm willing to read this twice a month.
