Comic Book Case
Aquaman #50 (Mera is just awesome)
So Arthuer and Mera are putting there plans in motion to bring Atlantis to the U.N. but first Arthur has to figure out what is attacking people near water along with two FBI agents whose names don't matter. We are looking at a really good story it seems. We have tensions from the current issues from Atlantis as the press meeting for the first Atlantis Embassy is under way and for good reason with the Atlantis Invasion and the issue with Thule, Atlantis doesn't look that great. Mera handles all of this in a way I don't think anyone saw coming. It should be noted that we haven't seen Mera interact with people in such a large number or how well she interacts with people, let alone the press. It's a side we don't see from her. The monster and this "Otherness" that created him does seem interesting and since it now is in Arthur, I can't help but wonder how this will all play together.
Wonder Woman #50 (I get, the gods are assholes)
Diana finds herself meeting the Cyclops and learns some interesting truths while listening to Hephastus as he disciplines them for sneaking out. Diana is set on making things right the more she learns about things the gods have done like the imprisonment of Typhoeus to attempt to right the wrongs they have done as well as saving Zeke. The saving of Typhoeus is part of a series of things Hecate needs to save Zeke, the next one taking her to the Tartarus Pits on Themyscaria. Some things about this don't really make sense in the long term here. Hecate implies Gaia being behind the poisoning of Zeke but how does that link to Dr. Poison unless it was Gaia. The fight with Ares also doesn't make much sense, other than Ares wanting to be the god of war again but how did he know Diana would be there. It also begs a question as to why Diana doesn't go see any of the gods of medicine like HERMES, ASCLEPIUS, or APOLLO. This is made even worse when Diana sees Zola suggests it but doesn't bother herself.
Mighty Thor #5 (Forced Ceasefire)
So Jane Foster and Odin are finally having a throw down and it is honestly one of the most awesome things ever. However, it really takes a backseat to what actually does happen courtesy of everyone's favorite antagonist Loki. Jane once again gives us some dialogue on her relationship with Odin, how she and Thor had intended to marry but Odin saw her as unworthy of Thor and I kind of wonder if that was the reason for choosing her. The fight itself is again just something to look at as the important thing happens in chambers as Freya prepares to defend the chamber from Odin's brother before Loki stabs her. What's interesting is that Loki not only doesn't look proud/happy but he looks like he had come to this decision at the moment after learning the enemies plans. The stabbing of Freya gets Odin to stop fighting Jane Foster Thor and also gets the Congress of Realms back in session while Maliketh heads to other realms with Loki telling his Ice Giant father what he did again and again but not with any happiness. While it is still too soon to tell what will happen to Freya, Jane Foster Thor, or Odinson, it is clear that something big is coming.
Superman Lois and Clark #6 (We all knew it but all fun)
Lois and Jonathan are apprehended after Lois is outed as Author X which at the same time we get a flashback to when this Lois found out that the other Lois outed Superman as Clark. While Superman tries to get to Lois and Jonathan before it gets worse, Jonathan confronts his mother about their family. It seems that the criminal that got his own reality show was a way to stall Clark as Lois and Jon try to get out. While I'm still not sold on the character, I do like the attempt to hold Clark up in a conceivable way. Jonathan revealing he has some degree of Kryptonian powers was something wea ll knew was coming but this is the first time we get to actually see it though not in amazing way as he just breaks free of his ropes and even shows to be resistant to fire. This issue is more a bridge to get to our next point which will be Clark and Lois dealing with Jon's discovering them and his powers.
Scarlet Witch #4 (On the Witch's Path, nothing is ever clear)
Did not know why I didn't see this coming but whatever. It turns out that the women we saw was Wanda's mother who also called herself the Scarlet Witch though it seemed even Wanda didn't know since they had never met. It was a nice emotional moment that helped us understand Wanda a bit more and how the Witch's Path works. Wanda and the warlock do meet up and they clash but not before we get a bit of backstory from a man calling himself the Emerald Warlock. While their clash was magically interesting, it ending in essentially a stalemate was what made it good. As far as I know, she doesn't have a long list of enemies exclusive only to her, so the Emerald Warlock seems like a good choice if for no other reason than his namesake.
Batman #50 (Bat is Back and Better than EVA!)
Batman is back and ready but to take down Mr. Bloom he'll need help not just from Gordon but Duke as well. Unlike the other DC books I've read, this one seems to be aware of Rebirth happening, namely in how the pit that revived him, essentially rebooted his body, making him faster and stronger than he'd been in years. It's an interesting battle with some fun truths being revealed like Duke finding out who was originally behind Bloom and Gordon dealing with the Power Corporation while Batman deals with Bloom. It's a fun story and I'm hoping we get more on exactly what happened at the end in regards to certain things like Gordon, Wayne, Enterprises, etc. This doesn't have the great Bruce Wayne moments I like the most in Superheavy but we get some great stuff from Gordon as he tries to get it right presumably for the last time as Batman and even more as we talk about Gotham City, something else Snyder does well. If this is Snyder's last issue for Batman then it is a good run, having everything that he likes, except owl assassins.
